Sustainability startups are hot stuff – is the talent out there ?

Sifted‘s Connor Bilboe recently interviewed Vivent’s Sustainability Manager, Marina Martin Curran, to learn more about the challenges of hiring for sustainability driven startups.

“Finding talent doesn’t just mean new hires”

Beyond hiring within its team, Vivent sources talent from external organisations to carry out specialist research projects.

Vivent also collaborates with academic institutions such as Wageningen University in the Netherlands on student research projects. For example, it’s working with master’s students to look into the sustainability indicators of greenhouse-grown tomatoes. Vivent’s sustainability manager Marina Curran says this allows Vivent to conduct relevant research while giving students the opportunity to build up experience.

Marina started her career in international development specialising in monitoring, evaluation, and impact assessment of animal health programmes. She has worked as a consultant since 2001 in areas relating to sustainability: environmental reporting, training and lecturing, and assessing community investments for corporate clients. She holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh, where she investigated the relationship between corporate social responsibility and financial performance. Since 2008, she has carried out contracts for WWF, The Economist, the University of Geneva (arctic tourism), and lectured at HTW Chur, International University in Geneva, SUMAS and Business School of Lausanne in CSR and sustainability. Marina has worked for start-ups in the green energy and textile sectors.
